March/April 2025 Newsletter

Deadline for May/June Newsletter is Friday, April 25th.

From the Mayor

By: Gary Griffith 740.768.2632

What an old fashioned winter we’ve been experiencing this year. It reminds me of my childhood days in the 60’s. Once it started, there was no end until spring! Seems like the only thing that’s been happening in the Village is keeping the streets treated, and the presence of the Jefferson County Water Department in town repairing water breaks! A big Thank You to  JCW&SD employees for working in the inclement weather to keep water flowing to our homes.

With Spring on the way, the Council has decided to have Spring Cleanup on Thursday, May 1,2025. The Cleanup will be in coordination with the Springfield Township Trustees and the JB Green Team. As in the past, the roll off boxes will be at the Springfield Township Garage at 722 Monroe Street in Bergholz (next to the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department).

We are asking everyone to haul their unwanted items to the Township Garage and dispose of them in the roll offs. If you have no way to get it to the location, please place it by the street, in front of your residence, and someone will pick it up. This year JB Green Team will be on location accepting tires also.

As in the past, I want to Thank all Village Residents, both past and present, for what you do to make the Berg the envy of the Valley.

Our Yellow Creek website is up and running, and we are making progress on the new book. We have an editor and a publisher and are hoping if all goes well to be out for sale in July or August. We still have a few of the latest reprints of Tales and Stories of Yellow Creek left. We also reprinted a few of, The Last Night and the Last Day, about Morgan’s Raid because we had been asked for them.

Little did we expect that it would send us off on another venture. Because we held an event for Morgan’s Raid 150th Anniversary Commemoration in 2013, I think folks thought we could help solve a problem. The Morgan’s Raid Informational Panel south of Bergholz #51, on 164 is no longer readable. On investigation I found the panel at Deyarmonville #47, at the other end of our county is not readable also. The panel at Moorefield, Ohio has been vandalized with a saw. We have been working with Eric Hilty and Scottie Fabian at the Jefferson County Engineer’s Office and with ODOT at New Philadelphia to try and figure out who is responsible for the signs and how to get them fixed. The counties and state highway departments are only responsible for the placement of directional signs for the raid because they could cause road hazards.

The John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail (JHMHT), follows the raid route through Ohio for 557 miles, with 700 directional signs, has 56 interpretive panels and connects 19 counties. I have been in touch with Director Megan Wood at the Ohio History Connection, and she tells me the Ohio 150 Civil War Commission has been dismantled. No provisions were made for the care of the trail past 10 years, and the company that produced them is out of business. (The historical factions; states, towns, cities, etc. are now all making plans for our Nation’s 250th Anniversary in 2026.)

I then made contact with Andy Verhoff who was in charge of historical markers when we put up the Ohio Historical Marker at the Mooretown Civil War Monument that commemorates Company K of 2nd Ohio Voluntary Infantry that mustered in on Yellow Creek. Andy also helped us erect a marker for the birthplace of William Pittinger in Knoxville, Ohio who participated in the Great Locomotive Civil War Chase involving the locomotive, “The General”. The Mooretown Civil War Monument is part of the JHMHT as an alternative side trip from the route JHMHT drive. It’s nice that Andy was able to get us this kind of coverage for the monument and it has attracted attention for us. You can get a copy of the JHMHT Guide Book on Amazon. David Mowery’s book, Morgans Great Raid, is available there along with, Bully Boys, by Richard Baumgartner, that is about the 2nd Ohio Voluntary Infantry. Richard’s book has letters written home during the Civil War by Thomas George and William Pittinger. (Baumgartner wrote 7 books about Ohio’s involvement in the Civil War.)

Andy Verhoff is now in charge of Bricks and Mortar Grants for the Ohio History Connection. He said the JHMHT does not qualify for this grant but there is a misc. preservation and restoration grant that is 40/60 matching that we might be able to get. My next connection was with David Mowery who was on the committee for the JHMHT and his is my definitive book for information on the raid. David put me in touch with Bill Mahon, who assists Megan Wood, and Bill Kennedy, who is in charge of archives. They are getting the information we need, schematics and texts, to repair the panels. Also, they are going to send us brochures, bookmarks and informational materials to share. The OHS has a company that they now use for informational panels, signs and kiosks that we will be in touch with after we put a plan together.

Let us know your thoughts on this new adventure. If you know of any directional signs missing on the JHMHT please let us know. We are setting up a fund with the Springfield Twp. Trustees to handle donations for panel #51 in our area. If you want to help and donate, contact me at 740 768 2365.

Happy Spring to our Bergholz Family.

I know so many of us are looking forward to Spring with great anticipation. What an amazing season to see our Community burst into life and display beautiful color all around us. Our God is such an amazing artist!  Spring offers us many blessings, including the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus.  We get to celebrate the end of the reign of sin and death and take hold of new life through the reign of Jesus.

This winter has been especially hard for many I have come in contact with and has left a large percentage of people feeling lost and alone. I am here to tell you, God’s presence in our lives provides us a road map. With Him we are NEVER alone.

This Spring at Bergholz Faith Community Church you will have tons of opportunities for fellowship, to become part of our family, and get to join and serve with loving Brothers and Sisters of the body of Christ.  One of those opportunities is the 17th Annual Christ Walk that will take place on April 18th.  It allows us the chance to celebrate the Christians all over the Ohio Valley. Approximately 27 churches, from 3 countries and several states will be part of this year’s walk. This event was something created in hopes of unifying all of our Christian brothers and sisters regardless of where they worship. It is a day to be with all types of our family within the Body of Christ, including those we don’t usually get to worship alongside.  The experience of Unified Christians worshiping the Lord as one, is an AMAZING experience and Blessing we should all get to partake in. Please join us April 18th at noon at the Sycamore Youth Center in Steubenville. We will begin our walk from there after a worship Service led by Impact worship team and guest vocalist Bergholz Faith Community Church worship leader Jenna Porter, and Valleys Got Talent vocal winner Bella Thompson.

After worship will be a short sermon by Pastor Chad Thompson of Bergholz Faith Community Church. Then we begin our 7 mile walk leading to Crossroads Christian Church in Wintersville Ohio where there will be an ecumenical service with a contemporary worship team created by Amber Eiler of North River Church. We will end with communion. If you can’t walk the entire walk, reach out to us and we will let you know ETAs for the prayer stops.

As great as all this is, I want to encourage you not to wait until Christ Walk to fellowship and unify with our family in Christ. Here at Bergholz Faith Community we would love to worship with you by our side. We have special events often, and you can keep up with our most up to date information on our Facebook page.  Please come join us as we take the church body outside the walls to be the hands and feet of Christ this Spring. I want to personally invite you to come to church with me! We have our worship service at 10:45 am Sunday. Feel free to stop in a bit early and have some coffee, cocoa, or just to hang out. We have a nursery for little ones, infants to 4yrs, and a children’s church for 5yrs-12yrs old.

We also are a host site for AA Thursdays at 6:30. Fearless Faith preteens, ages 10-13, will be Wednesday at 6pm.  We ask you please watch our Facebook page for the next session of Blaze Youth which will be 9th-12th grade. As always, thank you for taking the time to learn about what is going on here at FCC. If you have a need, prayer request, or question, feel free to reach out to Pastor Chad at 740-768-2835.

When April Comes

By Virna Sheard

When April comes with softly shining eyes,
And daffodils bound in her wind-blown hair,
Oh, she will coax all clouds from out the skies,
And every day will bring some sweet surprise, —
The swallows will come swinging through the air
When April comes!

When April comes with tender smile and tear,
Dear dandelions will gild the common ways,
And at the break of morning we will hear
The piping of the robins crystal clear –
While bobolinks will whistle through the days,
When April comes!

When April comes, the world so wise and old,
Will half forget that it is worn and grey;
Winter will seem but as a tale long told —
Its bitter winds with all its frost and cold
be the by-gone things of yesterday,
When April comes!

Lent has always been a special time at Christ UMC. We will gather for the Ash Wednesday Service on March 5th and continue to celebrate Christ throughout the month of March and April with our Lenten offering. Instead of “Giving Up” something for Lent, we focus on our many blessings. Blessings of light, food, clothing, entertainment, health, shelter, and most of all Jesus and the opportunity to worship Him. We haven’t chosen where this special offering will go, but if you would like to participate, you can mail your donation to PO Box 127 East Springfield, Ohio 43925.

Maundy Thursday Service will be held April 17th at 6:30pm and Good Friday Service will be April 18th at 6:30pm. Easter Sunday Services begin at 8am with Sunrise service, followed by breakfast. Sunday School is at 9:45am and Easter Worship Service is at 11am.  Please join us on these special days.

Wednesday evening Bible Studt will start again on April 2nd at 6:30pm. Everyone in our community is welcome to join us.

On February 2nd, Rev. Kathy Dickriede. the Connectional Ministries Office Missions and Community Engagement Director and UMVIM Coordinator Chair of the Order of Deacons in East Ohio led us in worship and shared with us about the opportunity of supporting a UM Missionary. Our Congregation is planning to choose which missionary to support at our March Administrative Council meeting.

On March 2nd, the Rev. Kimberly and Doug Arbaugh, representing Carrollton First UMC, shared about their recent Guatemala Missionary Trip. Rev. Kimberly was the lead past at Carrollton at the time of the trip. She is now the director of the Urban Mission In Steubenville.

Christ UMC donated over 100 items to the Urban Mission from our mitten tree this winter. We also continue to collect and give non-food items to WEBA,

If you are looking for a home church, or just want to stop in for a visit, we have Sunday School at 9:45am and Morning Worship at 11am. Come and join us.

Something to Think About

By: Dave Miller

Wow! What a winter we have been experiencing! When God ended the flood and brought Noah and his family to dry ground, He made two promises to him. One, many will recall. That is that God would set His rainbow in the cloud. (Genesis 9:13) I through many years of life have seen many rainbows, even some incredibly gorgeous double ones. The other promise is less known and is found in Genesis 8:22, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

As cold and snowy as it has been this winter, outside my door is a patch of day lilies. I have noticed several new shoots poking up through the snow and ice. This summer, I will have many beautiful orange flowers in that patch. In my youth, we called these kinds of flowers tiger lilies, but now they are day lilies. Soon the trees will bring forth bud and leaf. I’d rather look at hills of green leaves than the hills of dark branches this winter.

Another sign of Spring is that every store I have been in recently has a rack or two of seeds. When my wife Shelva was alive, she always had to look at those racks to see if there were any varieties of tomatoes she had not yet grown. When I built the addition to the farmhouse where she was raised some years ago, I made the windowsills 12 inches wide so she could place her seedlings on them until it was time to plant them in the garden. Looking at the calendar, it will probably be less than two months, and we will hear the sound of lawn mowers and trimmers. Nothing looks better than a well mowed and trimmed lawn. Although we all remember that in the Summer of ’24 there were weeks grass was not mowed because of the area drought.

Spring will also bring beautiful flowers to the pots and gardens. My nephew in Cincinnati has a landscape and greenhouse business. A few days ago, he put a photo of one of his greenhouses on Facebook. The building is filled with pots of seedlings just beginning to take root. Not too long from now, they will be beautiful marigolds, begonias, and petunias.

One of the things I miss living in the village is the song of the birds as they return from winter hibernation. I have had a robin in my yard several times over winter. I have heard others say they have had larger groups of robins this year, but I miss hearing those morning songs. The promise God made so long ago will be fulfilled again this year. Seedtime and harvest will come. It always has no matter the amount of snow and icy days winter has brought to us.

Bergholz Fellowship /Chestnut Ridge Churches

It has been a bitter cold and snowy winter in northeastern Ohio this year, something akin to what I remember as a young man. This year, we got some good snowfall! We got some good cold weather! We had ice and wind and just what winter is SUPPOSED to be in northeast Ohio in the winter months! In my very humble opinion, IT’S ABOUT TIME! Enough of these wimpy winters! Let’s have snow! Let’s have cold! Let’s have the ice! BRING IT ON, I SAY! Ok, enough of that. We are now deep into February and the winter season will soon be winding down. March will start to show us some spring like weather…at least as a teaser before April really shows us what spring is all about, and that is how God planned it to be where we find ourselves living.

While the winter months have been trying in some ways; we wound up cancelling church, so far, on two separate occasions due to cold and ice, we have that faithful core group who no matter what, will come to church to worship the One True God in His house! We still read the Word, we still sang the hymns, we still worshiped in Spirit and in Truth and it was GOOD!

We are coming into the season of Easter, and I am so looking forward to that. It seems that I wind up alternating services during this time of year. Last year, we did a Maundy Thursday service, so this year, we will have a Good Friday service at 7:30pm on Friday, April 18th at Bergholz Fellowship Church at 266 2nd St. Bergholz. Then on Sunday April 20th, we will have a “Son Rise” service at 8:00am at Bergholz Fellowship or if the weather is permissible, in the gazebo across the street. After the service, we will come back together at BFC (Bergholz Fellowship Church) for a light breakfast, then at 10:00, we will celebrate the Risen Lord Jesus with an Easter Sunday morning worship service. I confess, I love the Easter story. From the gory beginnings of Good Friday to the resurrection of Jesus on the third day, it is all just beautiful! For so many years, I struggled with the term, “Good Friday”. What could possibly be good about someone dying by crucifixion on a cross? Then as I grew as a believer in the Risen Lord Jesus Christ, it became clear that without the crucifixion of Friday, there could have been no resurrection on Sunday morning, and we would ALL be lost! That’s what is good about Good Friday!

We would love to welcome you to our Bergholz Fellowship, Chestnut Ridge Church family. If you don’t have a home church, come and check us out. We are independent, bible believing, bible teaching churches. We have no affiliation with any denomination, and we kind of like it that way!

We worship every Sunday at either Bergholz Fellowship Church, 266 2nd Street, Bergholz, Ohio on the even numbered months, February, April, June, August, October and December at 11:00 and at Chestnut Ridge Church, 1177 Cinder Rd. SE, Bergholz, Ohio on the odd numbered months.

Have a blessed day and I pray that we see you soon!

Our 2025 theme will be “FOCUS” and comes from Colossians 3:1-2,Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”  With all the distractions around us

our goal for the year is to stay Christ-centered.

On Sunday, February 9, we held our annual Souper Bowl Luncheon. This is one of our favorite social times and this year we had 13 soups for the congregation and guests to taste and enjoy. Donations were received for the local food banks.

On March 16, we will start a six-week small group study entitled UNOFFENDABLE-How Just One Change Can Make All of Life Better. In this six-session Bible study, based on the bestselling book of the same name, Brant Hansen shares practical ways to live life with less stress and more care by becoming unoffendable. In his highly entertaining style, he seeks to lift the religious burdens from our backs and allow us to experience the joy of gratitude every day of our lives—flourishing the way God intended. Call the church for information about when the class will meet at 740.543.3937.

Student Ministries (6th-12th grade) meets on Sundays at 6:00 food, fun, and Bible Study.  Two activities coming up are the NEO Church of God Youth Overnighter at the Salem Community Center Friday-Saturday, March 14-15 and a trip to Canton Tinseltown on Sunday, March 30 to view The Chosen: The Last Supper (part 1).

The first Sunday of Lent was March 9, and we will start a sermon series called Easter People Are… We will explore the characteristics of those who have encountered a living relationship with Jesus Christ.

Following the AM service on Sunday, March 16, we will have a St Patrick’s Baked Potato and Salad Bar. We will have all kinds of add-ons for potatoes. Green will be the theme for the punch and cake, too. We will start eating around 12:15 and the public is welcome to join us.

On Sunday, April 6, we will move our Sunday Worship time from 10:30 to 10:00 am. To prepare for that change, we will offer donuts, coffee, and juice at 9:45 on Sunday mornings in March.

We are planning an “Eggstravaganza” with other community leaders and organizations. The event will be held on Saturday,April 12 at noon at Rogers Park. Registration will begin at 11:00 am. How can you get involved? This will be an Easter egg hunt, so we need candy to stuff the eggs with. We would also like to have Easter baskets and items that will be given away as prizes to those in attendance. Additionally, we are looking for volunteers to work the event and prepare. We will need people to help stuff the eggs, put the eggs out, and other little jobs. If you would like to donate candy, baskets or gifts, or would like to volunteer, call the church.

During Holy Week, the church will recognize Palm Sunday (April 13) with the marching of Palm branches by the children, observe Maundy Thursday with Communion and Foot washing at 7:00.  A Good Friday Service will be at 7:00. This service is a solemn service where scriptures concerning Jesus’ suffering and death are read and candles are extinguished. On Easter morning, April 20, we will host a Community Sunrise Service at the downtown park in Amsterdam around 6:30 followed by breakfast and then an Easter Celebration service at 10:00.

On Sunday, April 27, during the AM service we will celebrate the church’s 115th Anniversary with lunch to follow. We plan to have a special guest from the past celebrate with us. As always, everyone is invited to celebrate with us.

The Annual Women’s Retreat is scheduled to be held May 2-4. All women in the area are invited to attend. More details are coming soon. If you are interested in attending contact Donna Whitmore (740.457.6675)

Sunday, May 4, we will have a TACO Bar after the service.  A fun time with a Cinco de Mayo theme.

Amsterdam Community Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered program with large and small groups where everyone can find freedom from any hurts, hang-ups and habits that are controlling their life. We cover any topic from anger, codependency, eating disorders, food addiction, love and relationship addiction, physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, chemical dependency, anxiety, depression and much more! We begin the evening with large group worship and then transition into open share small groups. We want everyone to find a sense of family at ACCR so after small group, everyone is invited for a meal in the Warrior Way Café located in the fellowship hall. We also have classes for kids aged 5-11 in the Celebration Place and grades 7-12 in the Landing. Each program meets on Wednesday at 6:30 pm.

Our worship service starts at 10:30 am on Sunday (10:00 am Starting April 6) with children’s church offered. The youth meet on Sunday evening. During the week we have a Mixed Adult Bible Study on Wednesday at 7:00 and Women’s Book and Bible Study on Tuesday at 76:30 and Men’s Bible Studies that meet on Thursday at 7:00.

Like us on Facebook or contact us at 740.543.3927 or [email protected]. A place where imperfect people are welcomed. If you do not have a church home, join with us as we bring life (Jesus) to the communities God has called us to serve in.
