Spring has sprung!
Spring in the Berg is in full force with the trees getting their leaves, spring flowers budding, birds singing, and outdoor temperatures warming up!

A big Thank You to Chad Hazelip for working the past month cleaning up trash and such left over from the harsh winter months! Thank You to all the Village Residents that participated in the Village Clean Up on April 30 to rid your properties of unwanted items.

Just a reminder that 25 or so years ago council passed an ordinance where there is to be no burning inside Village limits. This was done because of complaints from Village Residents that may have had a medical reason and or breathing problems. Plus having smoke coming in your open windows.

In order to help Village Residents get rid of their yard waste, the Village started having residents take their yard waste down across the tracks behind the Village garage. For those that had no way to transport their yard waste, the Village asked Residents to bag the debris and place it by the street, and the Village would haul it away at no charge. So out of respect for your neighbors I’m asking anyone that has yard waste to please either take it to 901 Washington Street or contact me. You are allowed to have a backyard wiener roast as long as it is in a contained area, and you put it out before retiring for the evening! Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

I have been asked about electric bicycles on Village Streets. Because the State or Village has no restrictions or limited restrictions on them, they are considered the same as a regular bike. Because they are considered on the same basis as a regular bicycle, this means they are to follow the same rules as a motor vehicle. I am asking any parent that buys one for their child to please educate them on the rules of the road! We as Village Officials would hate to see anyone getting hurt or a motorist being involved in an accident because someone wasn’t following the law! Thank you for your help on this matter.

School will be out for the summer so please watch out for the little ones traveling the Village Streets from one location to another.

Hats off to the Richmond Baseball Association that is using the Village ballfields, on Fourth Street again this year. If you haven’t been by the fields, it’s worth the ride to see how nice they look. It’s nice to see activity on the fields.

To clarify an issue that I have been approached about in the past month or so, The Village of Bergholz is in no way associated with the daily operations of the Fire Department or EMS. These organizations are private and run by a board of directors picked by members of each organization.

The connection the Village has with each organization is the Village is the pass through for the tax levy money collected by the Jefferson County Treasurer, passed on to the Village and then the Village passes it on to each organization. The Village has a separate contract with each entity. For future correspondence with each organization the contact person is: EMS Donna Daily and the Fire Department Dwayne Morley.

As always, I want to Thank Village Residents, both past and present, for what you do to make the Berg the envy of the Valley!

We are thrilled to announce that the WEBA food pantry will be having our annual yard sale/bake sale on May 8th and 9th from 9am to 2pm at the St. Joseph School, State Route 164. This special event helps us raise crucial funds for our pantry. Hope to see you there!

We also warmly welcome anyone who would like to get involved-whether you’re an old friend of the pantry or a new face-join us as a volunteer! Every helping hand makes a difference, and we’d love to have you as part of our team.

A year and a half ago, I had a stroke and heart attack. I thought that this was my end of journey working at the food pantry. Thank you for prayers, along with churches, supportive friends, and family who uplift me.

Recovery is a journey; take it one step at a time. Every progress counts, no matter how minor. I kept my mind engaged in the food pantry and in activities. This boosts me in mood and motivation and focus on what I can do, rather than what I can’t.

Every month at the Pantry, hundreds plus families receive the food they need. What’s less visible is the remarkable circle of volunteers who make that possible. We couldn’t do what we do without our volunteers, and we are so grateful for the many service hours spent ensuring our neighbors in need are fed.

Food Bank Delivery Truck
It starts before our doors even open. Volunteers are helping unload 4000lbs plus of food items and placing food inside pantry.

Organizing Food
From there, our Receive & Stock Volunteers step in: sorting, organizing, and shelving each item so it’s ready to be used. Behind the scenes, Box Packers prepare shelf-stable items in advance, making sure distribution days run smoothly and efficiently.

Distributing Food
When it’s time to serve our guests, Distribution Volunteers are the welcoming faces who bring everything together, ensuring each family receives nutritious food with dignity and care.

Each of these roles is essential. Each one connects to the next, and together, they form a continuous cycle of service that keeps the Pantry running month after month.

When you give, whether it is time, money, or food, you make difference in the lives of our clients Thanks you for your contribution.

Spring brings a renewed sense of energy to our community and a wonderful opportunity to focus on staying strong, steady, and active at every age.

We have an amazing group of ladies who meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 7:00 a.m. for Senior Fit. In class, we focus on strength, range of motion, and balance—all essential areas as we age.

We begin with a gentle 10-minute warm-up to get the blood flowing and the heart pumping. Then, for about 30 minutes, we use weights, machines, resistance bands, and body weight exercises to strengthen the entire body, all at your own pace. We finish with 10 minutes of core work, balance training, and gentle stretching to improve flexibility.

Dedicating just three days a week for less than an hour has made a meaningful difference for these incredible women. It has been such a pleasure to watch them grow stronger, and the camaraderie—the way they support and encourage one another—is truly something special.

As the warm days of summer arrive, there’s no better time to invest in your health and enjoy the support of a great group. Come join us as we get stronger for longer!

Hey there. How’s everyone?

I’m TJ Anderson and I’m putting on a Rogers Park Flea Market Saturday, August 8th 10am-5pm. The Amsterdam Council and Mayor have given me permission and their blessings to do this, and I appreciate them very much allowing me to do so.

All the proceeds that come from this event will go to Let’s Fight Together, Jefferson County United Way, Amsterdam Fire Department, Amsterdam VFW, and the Edison Baseball/Softball Youth Association.

We want to have 40-50 Vendors and Food trucks at this event, someone making hot dogs and drinks for donation only, a gun raffle, and 50/50. Someone is coming to make Rogers Park Flea Market T-shirts. I’m also going to have a basketball shoot out contest for kids and big kids.

We have some fun things planned. This Flea Market will have a lot of support from the community.

One thing we must get started with is advertising. I’m looking for donations to help me advertise for the Flea Market and make it successful. If you would like to donate, it would be appreciated!

Any check donations can be written to Let’s Fight Together.

Something to Think About
By: Dave Miller

In the last issue of the Newsletter, I shared some thoughts regarding 1 Corinthians 13 of the New Testament. Now I would like to continue those thoughts. In verses 4-7, the Apostle Paul gives us qualities of the kind of love he is writing about.

Dennis the Menace and Margaret are talking. “Margaret,” he asks, “What would be a really great gift to give my mother for Mother’s Day?” “You could make up your bed for a whole year, keep your room clean, you could eat your vegetables without complaining.” “No, “replies Dennis. “I want to give her something practical.”

Love is kind. It is energetic. It gives itself away in kindness. Facebook some time ago had a quote from Robin Williams. “Everyone you know is fighting a battle you know nothing about – always be kind – always.” The store clerk, the Wal-Mart greeter, the office receptionist. We ought to care for others. The last couple of years of her life, my sister Donna was homebound because of illness. Periodically she would call her minister and ask if there were any in the church who needed encouragement. She would then write them a note. How much do each of us need a daily word of encouragement?

Love does not envy. We should rejoice in each other’s accomplishments. Back in the 70’s, I was living on Staten Island in NYC. It was when gold chains around the neck became popular. There was a rash of robberies. Guys running up to someone, grabbing the gold chain, and running off. I want what you have!

Love does not boast. It has been said, “If I don’t blow my own horn, who else will?” A friend in NY became a nurse. Soon her license plate was “NO 1 NURSE.” In John chapter 23, the disciples of Jesus are arguing about who was the greatest among them. Yet, it was Jesus. Jesus who took up the towel and basin of water and washed their feet, the job of the lowest of household servants,

Love is not rude. The love Paul is talking about does not hold grudges. It does not put down. Love causes me to consider the opinion of my brother. The text goes on to say, “Love is not self-seeking.” In other words, love does not insist on its own rights. In human relationships,” If you love me….” may be the cruelest of words. We barter love for…. You fill in the blanks.

Love is not easily angered. One writer says, “Love does not fly into a temper.” In the fourth grade we had a brother and sister come into our class. One day when the teacher had to leave the room for a minute, they actually got into a fist fight over something! Love does not hold grudges. It keeps no records of wrongs. You know, like, “That’s the fifth time you forgot to close the drawer” or “that’s the third time you forgot to put your socks in the clothes hamper.”

I close with Paul’s words in 13:13. “But now abides faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” What is your love quotient?

Certainly, spring is upon us…maybe. It seems like we go from the mid to high 70’s one day to the low 30’s the next! WELCOME TO OHIO!

The upside is that God gives us just enough of everything we need; enough warm weather, enough rain, enough wind.

We have everything we need to live a good life; all we have to do is accept what He gives us. Look at Matthew 6:25 and a little beyond and you’ll see what I mean. “Look at the birds of the air, they don’t sow or reap or stow away in barns, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth more than they are?” I would say that God gives us all that we need and for those of us here in the US of A, maybe even a little MORE that we absolutely need!

We’ve had a good spring season at our two small member churches. I would say that for all intents and purposes, the winter season is over, and we can start to look forward to the warmer weather that we get in northeastern Ohio. I know that as of writing this article, I’ve mowed my grass twice, AND IT NEEDS IT AGAIN! Not complaining, I enjoy mowing. But even on a day when it goes very well and I don’t get stuck in the mud, it takes me a good three hours to complete the work. God is GOOD!

I want to thank the many good people who helped out with our fund raiser at Chestnut Ridge Church. Every year, the ladies of the church make chocolate Easter eggs to sell and this year, even though they had to raise the price due to the increase of the price of ingredients, we still had a VERY good final profit. We appreciate all who stepped up and helped us continuing to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ in the world we live in. Without your support and help, some would not have as much to eat or perhaps not enough clothing to keep them warm. THAT’S BECAUSE YOU HELPED OUT! THANK YOU!

By the time you read this article, her concert will be over, but on Sunday, April 26th, my wonderful wife of almost 43 years gave a piano concert at Bergholz Fellowship Church. At the time of this writing, it hasn’t happened yet, I have heard her play and I know it will be GOOD! THANKS DARLENE!

If you don’t have a home church, please think about joining us at either Bergholz Fellowship Church, 266 2nd Street Bergholz on the even months of the year at 11:00am Sunday morning, or at Chestnut Ridge Church, 1177 Cinder Rd. SE, Bergholz, Ohio on the odd months of the year at 11:00am.

Hope you will join us to praise and worship the Living God!

Shalom

East Springfield Christ UMC

Pastor Deborah Kellar

We are once again in the season of Easter and excitedly awaiting the arrival of Pentecost on Sunday, May 24th. Pentecost occurs fifty days after Easter Sunday and celebrates the arrival of the Holy Spirit descending like fire on the apostles (Acts 2). Some call it the birthday of the church.

Christ UMC is looking forward in many different directions. Our Adult Sunday School Class has been studying “God’s Wrath Satisfied in Christ.” This is not a topic we often like to study or discuss, yet it is still a part of God’s plan of righteousness through faith. We will finish this study in May and begin our Summer Quarter, “The Lord’s Patience with His People.” Please join us on Sunday mornings.

At 6:30 on Wednesday evenings we meet for Bible Study and prayer time. We concluded an in-depth look at the minor prophets of the Old Testament, and now we are studying some of the writings of the Apostle Peter.

We try to move Church outside our building and into the community as much as possible. Look for our float in the East Springfield Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25th. We are also in the planning stages for our Second Block Party on July 19th. We will have an outdoor Worship Service, picnic, games, plus more. Full details will be in the July/August Newsletter. Mark your calendar and save the date now. Plan to join us!

One of the larger directional changes we are taking currently is Pastor Deborah Kellar is concluding her ministry with us. Our Congregation has been Blessed with the growth we have experienced under Pastor Deborah’s leadership. We have become more active followers of Christ because of her. Christ United Methodist Church extends our heartfelt thanks to all the love she has shown us.

If you are looking for a home church, or just want to stop in for a visit, we have Adult Sunday School at 9:45am and Morning Worship at 11am. You can also watch our worship service on our Facebook page. Bible Study is each Wednesday at 6:30pm – 7:30pm, followed by a prayer service. We would love for you to come and join us.
